Okay, let's explain _____ History Months

    thisshitisallracist:

Just to get it out of the way.

The reason minorities get, nay, deserve their own history months is because that shit don’t get taught in schools normally.

Do you know how much schooling I had to sit through before I learned about the trail of tears? Do you? 8, I learned about the Trail of Tears in 7th grade.

BUT GUESS WHO I LEARNED ABOUT EVERY YEAR BEFORE THAT?

    AWW YEAH. THAT ASSHOLE.

I knew he was president and the reason America had as much land as it did but it never occured to anyone that maaaybe we should learn about the GENOCIDE that was carried out under his name.

    NAAAAAH.

Know when I learned about Asian cultures/history? The migration from China to California? The many reasons? The people? The railroads?

    NEVER.

Well not under any formal learning anyway, my high school had a history elective you were allowed to take in Sophomore year but I picked Spanish/Hispanic history…from what I gather though that setup is pretty rare.

But, and this is rich, guess what we went back to learning next year? It’s okay. You can guess.

American History! JESUS CHRIST COLOR ME SURPRISED.

Hey, who knows who Toussaint L’Overture is? I do! Guess when I learned about him? My senior year of High School. I dunno, maaaybe it’s just me, but I kinda sorta think he’s an important figure in world history…

Listen, can you remember your old Social Studies book? Imagine yourself flipping through that book, how many PoC do you remember seeing before that one unit on Civil Rights? I can remember…slaves..and in middle school maaaybe something about Natives if the teacher felt like remembering they exist.

That’s why these months exist, so many schools/teacher wouldn’t teach about other groups of people if they didn’t have a friendly reminder that other races exist and did stuff throughout history. PoC did not just pop up one day, they did, you know, contribute to the world we live in today.
