I thought this was awesome, though I was bothered when in part 2 this came up:

“Is it important to you that you’re male?”
    “Yes.”
    “Yes, why?”
    “I feel strong, powerful.”
“Your gender is important to you.”
    “Yes.”
“Do you want to be seen as a male?”
    “Yes.”
“Yes! Has anybody ever said to you “when I see you I don’t see you as a male”?”
“No.” (I’ve heard that one for myself before, ugh.)
“Has anybody ever said to you “when I see you I don’t see you as black”?”
    “Yes.”

I’m not trying to pick stuff apart, and maybe she did mention things that were edited out…but I feel she could have touched on sexism. However that wasn’t the focus so maybe it just was ignored. Or I’m seeing it in an odd way and it wasn’t a big deal?

I’m also tired with the oppression olympics (an after thought). This issue being more important than that issue, yadda yadda…they’re all issues. Blah.

how about when you’re good enough to get documentaries made about your teaching exploits you do a panel on sexism your gotdamn self you derailing mofo

But that would involve doing some damned work & apparently that’s impossible.

    yeah.

the issue here is racism, not gender. she highlights how they all intersect in the beginning anyway —- it’s impossible to separate the room that way into different groups because so many identities intersect. you would have to split yourself into more than one part.

Come to think of it, that’s EXACTLY what White folks expect people of color to do, as being both a person of color AND a woman, AND LGBTQ, AND disabled AND poor and/or everything else is somehow impossible. Oh, in some progressive circles there is some lip service to the idea of intersectionality, but as Inigo says, “I do not think it means what you [they] think it means.”

It’s not a simple mathematical formula. It’s the fact that people embody all their identities and oppressions at the same time. Race, gender, sexuality, ability, etc. influence how people read each of those things when it comes to real people.

From my various experiences in trying to educate Whites on racism, I honestly do not believe those White kids learned ANYTHING except how to cover up their shit better.  I bet most of them just became better aversive racists with their main tactic being just avoiding the hell out of PoC period and keeping us as far away from them as possible all with the excuse of not wanting to be in danger of offending us.  That one pierced White girl talked only about herself and how SHE felt about it. No word of ANY insight as to how she feels about PoC having to deal with that shit EVERYDAYUMDAY of our ENTIRE LIVES.  Nope, it was all “ME! ME! ME!”

Exactly. The short-haired chick was making it all about how SHE felt.

They didn’t focus on the fact that it was teaching them about how POC are treated on a daily basis! These kids probably cut off all their non-white friends and reaffirmed their subconscious desire to be surrounded by their own.

This should have been an ongoing thing until they got the point. One hour isn’t enough, it should have been a whole semester.

In fact, these types of tests should be done outside of the classroom as well, as part of sensitivity training.
